What s in a Name?

Names of luxury cars sold in the United States, in recent decades, have a slow but steady transition from an actual names alphabet soup of acronyms and writing series / codes.
It engine size is not really a starting point, because the manufacturers had doing it since beginning of the automobile era. After all, Cadillac began with names like " " Model C and Series 452 " ".
After Second World War, the American automobile industry came with the car after car with high style and a stylish name. The Lincoln Continental and a Cadillac Eldorado these are just a few examples. There were exceptions, notably the Chrysler 300 series.
European cars, but mainly the high-end European cars, which already have a combination of numbers and codes, with early legends like the Jaguar XK 120, BMW and the 2002 Mercedes-Benz 300SL. Ferraris, both with the names and designations series. Lamborghini was a notable exception, however.
Thus the stage was a dramatic shift. Acroynm and coded names were on high-line sports and luxury cars, regular names were on family sedans. It would not take long for the American and Japanese companies, by car to try to refresh their images with letter and number names.
One the first attempt, it was Lexus. Toyota Lexus was the second Japanese luxury brand created (Honda Acura was the first) to try and sell luxury cars Americans, who usually do not pay a lot of money for a Honda or Toyota. Acura finally dumped her name and legend Vigor in favor of names like the CL and TL. Finally, the Integra RSX if the redesigned (it is still the Honda Integra in Japan). Nissan Infiniti version, the answer to Lexus and Acura, and came with their own model lines and engine displacement name system, spawning models such as the G35, M45 and Q45.
It would not take long for the American luxury brands to follow . A fresh new image to help American buyers forget their stodgy old country-club image was exactly what was needed to potential buyers in the retirement showrooms.
Cadillac the legendary Eldorado and Fleetwood favor of the three-letter name as the CTS, SRX and XLR. There was continuity, as the STS and DTS names so far as trim level on the names and Seville deVille, respectively.
Lincoln has also gone the way of the three-letter name with the MKX and MKZ. The MKZ actually replaces the Risen Zephyr name, a nickname from Lincoln & 39;& 39;s storied past, came back ... Year.
The only for a shift to this type of model name has filtered to the common car. Pontiac had played with numerical designations back in the 80 & 39; s with their 1000 and 6000, and again in the alphanumeric with the new G5, G6 and the G8.
